History Augustus G. Weissert joined the Racine County Volunteers on September 10, 1861, one month after his eighteenth birthday. The local militia group became Company K, 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment upon reaching Camp Randall in Madison. Weissert participated in the battle of Nashville and sustained a knee injury on September 3, 1864.

In 1866, Weissert joined the Grand Army of the Republic in Madison. He would go on to be a very influential member of the GAR being elected as commander-in-chief and serving at both the state and national levels. Weissert also played an important part in the creation and placement of the Wisconsin memorial in Vicksburg National Park.
