|Description||Letters, personal military papers, and photographs of Roman J. Weber, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin native who served with the 27th Infantry Division during World War II. There are greeting cards and postcards written to his wife that provide informatino about basic training activities, several Valentine's Day cards, and a novelty greeting card from Fort Leonard Wood. Also found is correspondence received by Weber's wife from the Office of Dependent Benefits about problems she encountered obtaining benefits. Souvenir materials include several "membership" cards for crossing the ocean, a Christmas dinner program from Camp Callan (California), and an illustrated brochure about duty in Japan. The bulk of photographs consist of shots taken while Weber was serving in the Pacific. Depicted are combat scenes, corpses, prisoners of war, overseas graveyards, American soldiers, Filipino natives, Japanese women and soldiers, buildings, and scenery. There is also a photographic negative of soldiers posing in front of a building. A few photographs are of soldiers posing with Japanese flags. Of note are photographs of a barracks buring in 1945 at Fort Honmura (Japan) and the Japanese firemen involved in putting it out. One of the graveyards is identified as a United States Air Force cemetery. The names on a few of the grave markings are legible. There is also a photograph depicting Japanese soldiers surrendering under a white flag to an American soldier. In one picture a soldier distributes fod to a crowd of Filipino women and children, while a posted sign says "Show-Your-Mess-Card, 'No Mess Card,' 'NO-CHOW.'" One of the photographs depicting Filipino women is captioned as "Wash-Machine Mary," the soldiers' washerwoman at Okinawa. The rest of the collection consists of postcards printed in the United States depicting scenery of San Francisco, California and military training at Camp Callan.|
