Description Papers relating to the formation of American Veterans of World War II (AMVETS) Post #1 of Madison, Wisconsin, in 1945. The papers were originally in possession of Robert C. Smith of Madison, Wisconsin, who served as a corporal in the Army Air Corps 57th Service Group. The papers included in the collection are correspondence related to the formation of the post, press releases from the Madison AMVETS post regarding the formation the post and several newspaper articles regarding the creation and first meeting of the AMVETS post. AMVETS formed in December 1945 and President Truman signed the organizations national charter in 1947. The charter of the organization has been amended several times to broaden membership eligibility and changed the name of the organization to simply American Veterans to reflect this change. The mission of the organization is to support veterans and active military members while providing community service and preserving freedom.
