Description Papers and photgraphs pertaining to Charles O. Hansen, who served in the 17th and 18th Wisconsin Infantry Regiments during the Civil War. The collection includes a letter written by Hansen to his brother while Hansen was serving in the 18th Wisconsin. A typed transcript is also included that was done prior to the collection being purchased and accessioned into the WVM Archives. Images include a tintype of Hansen when he enlisted in the 17th Wisconsin, a gem type of Hansen from 1864, and two cartes de visites of Hansen around the time he served in the 18th Wisconsin. The collection also includes a group cartes de visite photograph of members of the 18th posing while in the field.

History According to a note with the collection, Hansen was 16 or 17 when he enlisted in the Army. His father took him out when he realized Hansen had enlisted. Hansen then joined the 86th Ohio Infantry Regiment in 1863 and later joined the 18th Wisconsin in January of 1865. More research will need to be done to determine the accuracy of this note.
