|Description||Cartes-de-visite of Robert H. Spencer, a resident of Windsor, Wisconsin, who served as a lieutenant colonel in the 47th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The photograph is a half portrait of a seated, young Spencer wearing his officer's uniform. Spencer enlisted in 1861 as a second lieutenant in Company H of the 10th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and was eventually promoted to captain. Spencer was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863 and made a prisoner of war in Tennessee. Spencer was later released and promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 47th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Spencer mustered out in 1865 and was given the brevetted rank of colonel. Following the war, Spencer returned to Windsor and worked on his father's farm for several years. Spencer then moved to Algona, Iowa, and worked as a post master. The cartes-de-visite was taken by E.R. Curtiss Photographer in Madison, Wisconsin.|
